Opener problems are diagnosis problems. The fastest path to a fix is isolating which part of the system failed — transmitter, sensors, settings, or the unit itself — and the steps below do that in order. Step 1: Isolate remote vs. wall button
Test the hard-wired wall button first — it tells you instantly which half of the system to suspect. If the wall button works but remotes and the keypad don't, the opener is fine; you have a transmitter problem (battery, programming, or a locked console). If the wall button also does nothing, the fault is at the opener: power, logic board, or motor. That one test cuts the problem in half.
Step 2: Check the safety sensors and their LEDs
If the door opens but won't close — or closes only while you hold the wall button — the photo sensors are almost always the cause. Look at the two small units near the floor of the door opening. Each has an indicator light: on most brands, one sensor shows a steady "sending" light and the other a steady "receiving" light, and a receiving light that's dark or flickering means the beam is blocked or the sensors are misaligned. Wipe the lenses, clear anything in the beam's path, and gently bend the brackets until both lights hold steady. A sensor light that won't come on at all can also mean a chewed or pinched wire — common in garages with rodents or stored ladders.
Step 3: Review force and travel-limit settings
A door that stops partway, reverses at the floor, or slams the last few inches usually has drifted travel limits or force settings — the dials or buttons that tell the opener how far to move the door and how much resistance means "obstruction." Small adjustments per your manual are fine. What's not fine is cranking force to the maximum to overpower a stiff or unbalanced door: that disables the safety reversal in practice and usually masks a mechanical problem, often a spring or roller issue, that's making the door heavy. If the door needs a lot of force to move, the opener isn't the patient — the door is.
Step 4: Reset and reprogram remotes and keypads
Reprogramming fixes most "remote suddenly stopped working" cases that a battery didn't. Every opener has a Learn button on the back of the motor unit; press it, then press the remote button within about thirty seconds, and the opener pairs to it. Keypads pair the same way, followed by entering your chosen PIN. Two notes: pressing and holding the Learn button typically wipes every paired remote (useful after losing a remote or moving into a new home — do it deliberately), and if a remote won't pair at all, suspect the opener's receiver board rather than the remote.
Step 5: Wi-Fi and myQ connectivity
If the door works from remotes but not from the app, the problem is networking, not mechanics. Reboot your router and the opener, confirm the opener is within reach of your Wi-Fi (garages sit at the edge of most home networks), and re-run the app's setup if it shows the device offline. App-only faults never require a service call for the door itself — but they're worth solving, since features like closing the door from your phone are genuinely useful.
When the board or gear is gone: repair or replace?
The clear signs of an internal failure are a motor that hums or grinds without moving the door (a stripped main drive gear) and a unit that behaves erratically or won't respond at all despite good power (a failed logic board). Both are fixable. Whether fixing makes sense depends on the opener's age: gears and boards are sensible repairs on newer units, while an old opener without battery backup, rolling-code security or modern safety features is often smarter to replace than to keep patching.
